There is no single best type of stay in Dubai. The right choice depends on how long you are staying, who you are with and how you plan to spend your days.
The four main options
Beach resorts
Best for a holiday where the hotel is part of the trip: private beach, pools, kids’ clubs and restaurants on site. Found mainly on Palm Jumeirah, in Jumeirah and at JBR. Expect to take taxis to the city sights.
City hotels
Best for sightseeing and short stays. Downtown, Business Bay, DIFC and the creek area put you near the Metro and the main attractions. Range from design-led midscale brands to five-star towers.
Serviced apartments
A middle ground: apartment space with hotel-style reception and housekeeping. Good for families and business travellers staying a week or longer.
Holiday homes
Privately owned apartments and villas managed by licensed operators or hosts. Most space for the money, least service. Always check the DET permit.

Costs to factor in
- Tourism Dirham: a per-room, per-night fee charged by hotels and holiday homes, set by category.
- Service charge and VAT: often included in quoted prices in the UAE; check the final total.
- Transport: a cheaper room far from the Metro can cost more overall once you add taxis.
