Your first week in Dubai: a checklist for new residents

A calm, step-by-step list of what to sort out in your first days, in the right order.

The first week sets up everything else. Work through these steps roughly in order; some depend on the ones before.

Day 1 to 2: get connected and moving

  • Pick up a tourist SIM or activate an eSIM at the airport.
  • Buy a Silver Nol card at any Metro station.
  • Download the RTA app and a taxi app.
  • Save the emergency numbers: 999 police, 998 ambulance, 997 fire.

Day 2 to 5: paperwork

  • Complete your visa medical test and Emirates ID biometrics if your sponsor has booked them.
  • Keep digital copies of your passport, visa, Emirates ID application and photos.
  • Download the UAE Pass app; it is used to sign in to many government services.

Housing

  • View properties and check each agent’s RERA broker card.
  • Sign your tenancy contract and register it with Ejari.
  • Open your DEWA account with your Ejari number and pay the deposit.
  • Book internet installation with du or e&.
  • Check whether your building has separate district cooling and register if needed.

Money

  • Open a bank account once your Emirates ID is issued, or ask your bank about opening with the application receipt.
  • Set up Salik if you will drive.

Health

  • Confirm your health insurance and find in-network clinics near your home.
  • Register family members if they are covered.

Settling in

  • Explore your neighbourhood on foot early in the morning or evening.
  • Read the area guide for where you live.
