Moving to Dubai: a practical overview

The order of steps for a smooth move, from residence visa to your first DEWA bill.

Most moves to Dubai follow the same sequence. Getting the order right saves a lot of back and forth.

1. Residence visa and Emirates ID

If you are moving for work, your employer usually sponsors your visa and arranges the medical test and biometrics. Other routes include investor, freelance, retirement and Golden Visa options. Visas in Dubai are handled by GDRFA Dubai and the federal ICP. Your Emirates ID card follows once the visa is issued and is needed for almost everything else.

2. Somewhere to live

Many people start in a serviced apartment or holiday home while they view properties. Rents are usually quoted per year and traditionally paid by a number of cheques; landlords increasingly accept more flexible payment plans. Read our renting guide.

3. Ejari, then utilities

Once you sign a lease it must be registered with Ejari. That registration is what lets you open a DEWA account for electricity and water, and it is also used for some residency and family-sponsorship processes.

4. Bank account, phone and internet

With an Emirates ID you can open a local bank account and switch from a tourist SIM to a resident mobile plan. Home internet is installed by du or e&.

5. Health insurance and a doctor

Health insurance is mandatory for Dubai residents. Employers must provide it for employees; check whether family members are covered.

6. Driving

Some nationalities can convert their home licence directly; others must take lessons and a test. Check eligibility with the RTA. Most residents also set up Salik, the automatic road toll account.
