How to book a hotel in Dubai: fees, timing and tips

What is added to the bill, when prices are highest, check-in rules and how to choose the right area, in one place.

Booking a hotel in Dubai is straightforward, but a few local rules and costs catch first-time visitors out. Here is what to know before you pay.

1. Choose the area before the hotel

Dubai is spread out along the coast, so the area you pick decides how much time you spend in taxis.

2. Know what is added to the bill

  • Tourism Dirham: a fee of AED 7 to 20 per room per night, depending on the hotel’s category, charged for up to 30 consecutive nights. It also applies to holiday homes and is usually paid at the property.
  • VAT: 5% applies to hotel stays in the UAE.
  • Service and other charges: hotels may add their own service charge and local fees. Booking sites usually show these under taxes and charges; compare the final total, not the nightly headline.

3. Pick your dates wisely

  • The cooler months, roughly November to March, are the busiest, and prices are usually highest then, especially around Christmas and New Year.
  • Large events such as exhibitions at the Dubai World Trade Centre can push up prices in the business districts. Check the events calendar for your dates.
  • From June to September it is very hot and many hotels offer lower rates; plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning and evening.
  • During Ramadan, expected to begin around 8 February 2027 (subject to the moon sighting), hotels stay open and many offer iftar and suhoor; some daytime services may change.

4. Check-in rules

  • Bring your passport (visitors) or Emirates ID (residents) for every guest who needs to register.
  • Many hotels place a refundable deposit hold on a credit or debit card at check-in. Ask how much and how long it takes to release.
  • Check-in is commonly mid-afternoon and check-out around midday. If your flight lands early or leaves late, request early check-in or late check-out in advance.
  • Unmarried couples can share a hotel room in the UAE since the 2020 legal reforms.
  • Some hotels set a minimum age for the main guest; check the policy if anyone under 21 is booking.

5. Getting from the airport

From Dubai International (DXB), the Red Line Metro runs from Terminals 1 and 3 towards Deira, Downtown and the Marina. Licensed taxis wait outside every terminal, and ride-hailing apps also operate. Hotels on the Palm, in the desert and at Creek Harbour are best reached by taxi or transfer. See arriving in Dubai for visas and every airport option.

6. Book with flexibility

Choose a rate with free cancellation when you can, and note the deadline and its time zone (Dubai is GMT+4). Read the room description carefully: “Burj Khalifa view” or “sea view” rooms can mean a partial view.
