SIM cards and mobile data in Dubai

Free tourist SIMs, visitor eSIMs and how to switch to a resident plan once you have an Emirates ID.

Staying connected in Dubai is easy. Visitors have several options on arrival, and residents can choose between three providers.

For visitors

  • du tourist SIM: du has offered a free SIM with a small data allowance to visitors at Dubai International Airport immigration. Ask at the counter on arrival; allowances change.
  • e& visitor eSIM: e& has offered an instant visitor eSIM activated by scanning QR codes at the airport and in the city.
  • Travel eSIMs: international eSIM apps let you buy a UAE data plan before you fly. Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  • Roaming: convenient but often expensive; check your home provider’s rates.

You need your passport to register a visitor SIM.

For residents

Once you have an Emirates ID you can sign up for prepaid or postpaid plans with du, e& or Virgin Mobile UAE. Home internet is installed by du or e&; your building may already be wired for one of them, so check before you choose.

Calling apps

Some internet voice and video calling services are restricted in the UAE. Messaging generally works, but check the current situation for the specific app you rely on.
